Applications for SY 2021-2022 Navajo School Clothing and Supplies Available October 4, 2021
Window Rock, Ariz. – The Navajo Family Assistance Services (NFAS) provides financial assistance for eligible school age Navajo children to purchase clothing and supplies, of their choice, in an effort to promote school attendance, encourage academic performance, and support self-confidence.
The NFAS will accept applications for Navajo School Clothing and Supplies (NSCS) for School Year 2021-2022, beginning Monday, October 4, 2021.
Families who were approved for the School Year 2020 – 2021 and did not receive their funds may call (928) 871-6847 to speak with Sophina Yazzie, NFAS Office Specialist.
“Navajo children enrolled in child care, Head Start, Pre-Kindergarten, Pre-school, and grades K through 12 for the 2021-2022 school year are eligible to apply. Previously, Navajo children were required to live and attend school on the Navajo reservation. The criteria have changed. Now, Navajo children residing off Navajo reservation may apply and they are not required to attend a school on the Navajo Nation,” stated Roselyn Begay, Delegated NFAS Manager.
The applicant must submit the following required documents with an application to NFAS:
1. The child’s Certificate of Indian Blood;
2. The child’s valid social security card;
3. A document on official school letterhead verifying the child is enrolled for the current academic year, or appropriate documentation verifying the child is home school or virtual learning such as, but not limited to, a document issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education, contract school, parochial school, or state operated school; and
4. Completed W-9 Form that is signed by the applicant.
“The Navajo School Clothing operations continues to improve its services. All funds are 100% passthrough meaning all the funds awarded to the NSCS program go to Navajo children rather than being used to hire personnel, pay storage fees, pay shipping costs, or to set up service contracts. All those costs have been eliminated by providing direct payment to families so that children can choose their own clothing style, or choose to use their funds for school supplies,” stated Deannah Neswood-Gishey, Division of Social Services Executive Director.
